LUSAKA, Zambia — In Zambia’s bustling capital, BongoHive has emerged as a vital engine for technological innovation, nurturing nascent start-ups and significantly contributing to financial inclusion over the past 14 years.
Recognizing the formidable hurdles faced by African innovators – including high operational costs, limited workspace, and unreliable internet – BongoHive provides crucial support. The Lusaka-based hub offers affordable co-working spaces, mentorship programs, training workshops, and essential networking opportunities, enabling start-ups to progress from initial concepts to tangible businesses.
“We exist to unlock Africa’s potential by helping entrepreneurs build sustainable, scalable businesses,” stated Tilyenji Mundungani, Marketing and Communications Lead at BongoHive. “To date, we’ve supported more than 2,800 start-ups, with a strong focus on gender parity, including over 1,000 women-led enterprises.”
A cornerstone of BongoHive’s efforts is the Standard Chartered Women in Tech initiative, which has provided crucial financial backing to 160 Zambian female founders, awarding grants of up to $20,000 each. These targeted programs not only facilitate access to capital but also actively address gender imbalances within the local tech start-up landscape.
Addressing a significant gap in financial literacy among entrepreneurs, BongoHive has also launched key initiatives such as the Investor Ready Hackathon, in partnership with MTN Zambia, and FinTech For You. These programs aim to equip budding innovators with the essential financial knowledge required for sustainable growth.
Despite its successes, Mundungani acknowledges ongoing challenges. “Rigid policies, limited funding avenues, and difficulties in accessing global markets remain significant hurdles,” she noted. “However, our commitment to supporting start-ups, particularly women-led ventures, remains unwavering, and we actively seek partnerships to amplify our impact.”
BongoHive was recently featured on Day 8 of the #40Days40FinTechs initiative, highlighting the vibrant FinTech ecosystem in Zambia and Malawi. While BongoHive itself isn’t a FinTech company, it serves as a crucial incubator for numerous FinTech innovators who are developing solutions to advance inclusive finance.
Now in its fifth year, the #40Days40FinTechs initiative has showcased over 200 impactful innovations across East and Southern Africa, increasing their visibility and fostering opportunities for partnerships, funding, and mentorship. The initiative champions financial inclusion through the adoption of tools like the Level One Project and Mojaloop.
