KAMPALA– Various stakeholders have called upon men as the heads of families to support their wives in ensuring that they produce children that they can effectively take look after.
During a one day engagement held in Kampala by World Vasectomy Day Organization in Kampala , Majority men were blamed for always referring to family planning as a women’s responsibility forgetting that it has to be a collective responsibility.
“Vasectomy is a safer family planning method in men which many people have not been aware of. It involves the cutting and sealing of the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra.” Remarked Jubilee Zacharia , the country coordinator for World Vasectomy Day Uganda.
He also pointed out that this method is being practiced with consent from both partners (woman and man) especially when has already given birth to children or those that are not willing to have children due to several reasons.
Rogers Ssenyonjo from Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU), revealed that ever since this program was introduced, a good number of men have embraced it without any side effect.
“We have special doctors who conduct this vasectomy exercise within a short period of time with less pain. Before undergoing this operation, you are taken through counseling process and Incase of any question, it is answered there and then.”
Ssenyonjo further noted that this process is reversible but it’s not a guarantee that you can impregnate a woman through sexual intercourse.
“Health workers are not well articulated with information concerning vasectomy , this calls for more awareness about the service to health professionals especially those dealing with family planning services” Ssenyonjo suggested
Nyombi Baker , 48 years, father of six who is among those on Vasectomy family planning, narrated to the media his whole life experience. He stated that at first he had phobia of undergoing surgery but with the counselling he received, he changed his mind.
“The whole process was not so painful as I had expected, it only took me three days to return to my work as a driver. Ever since then, I have been preaching the gospel to men in my community and lucky enough some have agreed to follow my path.”
He advised his age mates that have already had children to take up the vasectomy method so as to concentrate on taking good care of their families. “Chances are very high that you may not get an opportunity to educate up to university the children you have got at 50 years.”
This engagement was held at Hotel Africana by World Vasectomy day , an organization which focuses on engaging men in conversations about contraception together with other partners.
