KAMPALA, Uganda (UG Standard) — New allegations have surfaced regarding nepotism and deception at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, deepening a scandal surrounding the institute’s director, Prof. Pontiano Kaleebu.
The allegations, which follow a previous report of nepotism published in Trumpet News on Oct. 2, 2024, suggest Kaleebu has abused his office to promote relatives and family members to top positions within the institute.
According to multiple sources, Kaleebu fast-tracked his nephew’s promotion to assistant director, with the intention of elevating him to director when his current contract expires. Several relatives of Kaleebu allegedly hold full-time positions at the Medical Research Council while also occupying senior government roles at UVRI, potentially hindering the career advancement of other qualified scientists.
One relative was reportedly appointed head of virology despite being absent due to full-time commitments at the MRC research units.
Kaleebu has denied the allegations, claiming promotions at UVRI are based on performance and made by a promotions committee. However, further inquiry has revealed no evidence of such a committee.
The Inspector General of Government and related authorities previously cleared Kaleebu of office abuse and nepotism, but sources say this was based on incorrect and inaccurate facts.
Concerned individuals are urging authorities to address the issues of nepotism and sectarianism at UVRI, which they say have persisted for decades and harmed the careers of qualified scientists.
The allegations have raised concerns about mismanagement within the institution and the impact on its legacy and success.
UVRI officials were not immediately available for comment.
