Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has launched an innovative water harvesting and treatment technology at Mengo Senior School, in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The technology, designed to enhance water access and quality, is part of the Appropriate Technology Project, which aims to leverage intellectual property to foster sustainable development and promote sustainable practices.
Speaking at the launch, Gilbert Agaba, representing the Registrar General, emphasized the importance of intellectual property in driving technological advancements that directly impact communities.
“This project demonstrates how innovative solutions can address critical needs while fostering self-reliance and sustainability,” Agaba said. “URSB is committed to supporting such initiatives that contribute to national development.”
The technology harvests rainwater, treats it effectively for consumption, and ensures consistent access to clean water for the school community. The school, with over 6,300 students, was selected as the beneficiary community due to its vibrant innovation club and vast network of alumni and interested organizations.
Samuel Mulindwa Mukasa, Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association, commended URSB for the initiative, noting that the facility will help provide enough clean drinking water for students, reducing utilities costs.
Representatives from WIPO lauded the project, highlighting its alignment with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation.
The launch event included a demonstration of the technology, interactive sessions with students, and a discussion on the role of intellectual property in education and innovation.
