A Ugandan soldier has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at a bar in the northern district of Apac.
Okullo Haggai died in the incident, which occurred on 8 January at a bar in Kworo B Village.
According to a statement by Capt Edrine Mawanda, Public Information Officer for the 5 Infantry Division, a joint investigation by the police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) found that Private Amali Jacob was present at the bar with two civilians, Ibende and Olira.
A dispute allegedly broke out between them and the victim, reportedly over a woman.
Police recovered seven spent cartridges from the scene, and the body of the deceased was taken to Apac Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Private Amali Jacob was later arrested at his father’s residence in Kworo.
Further investigations led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a rusty SMG rifle, and a stick grenade.
Three additional suspects – Ibende, Olira, and Oyom Denis (also known as Ebende) – have been arrested and are being held at Apac Central Police Station.
“The security team remains resolutely committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding this incident and ensuring that all individuals responsible are brought to justice,” Capt Mawanda said.
The UPDF has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding peace and order in the region.
