The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has commended Uganda for its key role in promoting international cooperation.
In a message delivered to President Yoweri Museveni, Mr. Guterres praised Uganda’s efforts in strengthening the rules-based multilateral system.
Uganda has been chairing the Group of 77 and China, a bloc of developing countries, and has played a significant role in climate change negotiations.
The country will also chair the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) for the next two years.
“Uganda’s leadership has been impactful,” said Adonia Ayebare, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
The praise comes after Uganda’s participation in the recent Summit of the Future, which resulted in the adoption of the Pact for the Future.
The pact aims to promote international cooperation on issues such as climate change, technology, and human rights.
Uganda’s growing influence on the global stage is a significant development for Africa.
As a key player in regional organizations such as the African Union and the East African Community, Uganda’s leadership role is being closely watched.
The country’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement will also give it a platform to promote the interests of developing countries.
