Kampala, Uganda – UMEME, the national electricity distributor, has announced that it is upgrading all pre-paid meters, also known as Yaka meters, to ensure a smooth transition before the Token Identifier (TID) Rollover on November 24, 2024.
The upgrade is aimed at safeguarding the customer vending experience beyond November 2024. UMEME has assured customers that the upgrade process will be done at no cost to them.
To facilitate the upgrade, UMEME will send SMS notifications to customers informing them of the planned upgrade in their area. Customers can also initiate the upgrade process by visiting the nearest service center with their meter number.
The upgrade process involves loading three tokens into the meter, which will synchronize the meter and the system. Customers are advised to input any previously purchased tokens before the upgrade to ensure a smooth transition.
To check if their meter has been upgraded, customers can follow these steps:
For Conlog meters, press #005#, and check the display. If it shows “r1:t2”, the meter is not upgraded, while “r2:t2” or “r2:t10” indicates that the meter is upgraded.
For Hexing and Chint meters, press 873 and press “Enter”. If the display shows “01”, the meter is not upgraded, while “02” indicates that the meter is upgraded.
For Inhemeter meters, press 873 and press “Enter”. If the display shows “01-02”, the meter is not upgraded, while “02-02” indicates that the meter is upgraded.
UMEME has assured customers that the upgrade will not affect their existing credit on the meter. The company has also put in place measures to ensure that customers who are not available to have their meters upgraded before November will still have their meters upgraded by UMEME teams.
The upgrade is expected to affect all prepaid meters with old software versions. UMEME has advised customers to cooperate with the upgrade process to avoid any disruptions to their electricity supply.
Customers can visit the nearest service center or contact UMEME’s customer care for more information on the upgrade process.
