The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has announced that the country’s population has grown to 45.9 million, a significant increase from the 34.6 million recorded in 2014.
“The census was a resounding success, despite some challenges,” said Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, Executive Director and Census Commissioner of UBOS. “We are grateful to the government, stakeholders, and the public for their support and cooperation.”
The preliminary results of the 2024 National Population and Housing Census, released today, indicate a population growth rate of 2.5% per annum. The census, which was conducted in May 2024, also revealed a significant shift towards urbanization, with many Ugandans moving to cities and towns in search of better opportunities.
“The data will help us understand the demographic and socioeconomic trends in the country, and inform decisions on healthcare, education, infrastructure development, and economic planning,” Dr. Mukiza explained. “We are committed to producing high-quality statistics for Uganda’s development.”
The census results also showed a significant increase in the number of households, from 7.2 million in 2014 to 11 million in 2024. The average household size has also decreased from 4.7 to 4.4 persons per household.
“While there were some challenges, we are pleased with the overall success of the census,” Dr. Mukiza said. “We appreciate the public’s cooperation and look forward to continuing to serve the country with accurate and reliable data.”
The final census results are expected to be released in September 2024, after further data analysis and validation.
