KAMPALA, UGANDA —Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied reports that Ugandan diplomats were expelled from the United Kingdom due to human trafficking allegations.
The Ministry described the allegations as “misleading information” and clarified that no Ugandan diplomat has been expelled from the UK.
According to Vincent Bagiire, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the diplomats in question completed their 3-4 year tour of duty and were duly recalled to headquarters for further duty instructions, as is standard practice in diplomatic service.
Citing Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the Ministry explained that expulsion occurs only when a receiving state declares a diplomat persona non grata.
The Ministry defined human trafficking as “the unlawful act of transporting or coercing people for forced labor or sexual exploitation.”
PS Bagiire challenged the authors of the misinformation to produce evidence of expulsion.
This development follows recent reports of a senior Ugandan diplomat facing allegations of running a human trafficking operation in the UK.
Reports alleged that the diplomat smuggled Ugandan women into the UK under the guise of hiring domestic workers, exploiting them for labor.
However, the envoy denied the accusations as fabricated.
The Ministry reassured its commitment to combating human trafficking and maintaining diplomatic integrity.
