KAMPALA: Ministry of internal affairs spokesperson, Simon Mundeyi said Ugandan citizens with expired National IDs will be able to use them to travel across East Africa with no hindrances.
Mundeyi made the remarks on Monday 29th July 2024, during the weekly security press briefing at Police headquarters in Naguru.
‘’Ugandans can still use the National IDs whether expired or not to East African countries, with whom Uganda has a tripartite agreement’’. Mundeyi stated.
‘’People have been wondering on social media with many questions like what will happen to their coss-boarder movoments after expiry of thier National IDs, but the answer is that the National ID you carry has a NIN. A NIN does not expire and it is the most important feature on that National ID. So, you will continue to transact all businesses even with that expired National I’’. he added.
Mundeyi further noted that that Ugandans are still able to use the expired National IDs to process passports or open bank accounts.
This has come a time when majority of National IDs are set to expire beginning August 2024.
Reports from the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) shows that it is set to embark on mass registration and renewal of national IDs countrywide though the exercise which was earlier scheduled to begin on June 1, had to be postponed.
