KAMPALA, UGANDA – Uganda is set to host the Second Summit of the Nile River Basin Heads of State and Government on October 17, 2024. This high-profile event follows the country’s successful hosting of the First Summit in June 2017.
John Mulimba, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, recently briefed Ambassadors and High Commissioners from Nile Basin Member and Observer States on preparations for the upcoming summit.
Uganda, chair of the Nile River Basin States Initiatives until June 2025, aims to foster cooperation and sustainable development in the region. The summit coincides with the Cooperation Framework Agreement (CFA) coming into force on October 13, 2024.
The key objectives of the summit include launching the Nile River Basin Commission, guiding continued engagements among riparian countries, and launching the Nile River Basin Investment Program.
A joint meeting of Foreign and Water Affairs Ministers on October 16, 2024, will precede the summit. Uganda is committed to ensuring the summit’s success, marking a new era of cooperation and sustainable development in the Nile Basin.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will host the summit, reinforcing Uganda’s leadership in regional cooperation.
