Uganda has joined the global community in commemorating World Food Day, highlighting the importance of food security and nutrition.
This year’s celebrations are being held at the National Semi-Arid Resources Research Institute in Serere District, Teso region.
The theme, “Right to Food for a Better Life and Better Future,” emphasizes food security and nutrition as essential human rights.
Uganda’s Vice President, Rt. Maj. Jessica Alupo, is presiding over the event, which is spearheaded by the National Agricultural Research Organization.
The celebrations bring together local farmers, policymakers, non-governmental organizations, and international development partners.
Exhibitions showcasing agricultural technologies, innovative farming practices, and community food programs are also being featured.
World Food Day is observed annually on October 16 to mark the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945.
In Uganda, where agriculture is a significant source of livelihood, the event serves as a platform to reflect on progress made toward eliminating hunger and strategize for a food-secure future.
The country is focusing on promoting innovation and resilience in agriculture, particularly in regions prone to dry spells like Teso.
Uganda aims to achieve sustainable food systems, boost rural livelihoods, and improve nutrition nationwide.
The event highlights the importance of equitable access to food, recognizing it as a foundation for sustainable development and a prosperous future.
