
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil  — Ugandan Foreign Affairs Minister Odongo Jeje Abubakhar met with his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where they discussed strengthening bilateral relations.
The two ministers exchanged views on issues of mutual interest during the meeting, which took place Monday as part of the BRICS gathering.
Vieira welcomed Uganda as a BRICS Partner State and expressed optimism about Uganda’s future contributions to the group of emerging economies.
Abubakhar affirmed Uganda’s commitment to promoting BRICS values and advocating for the interests of the Global South.
The ministers agreed to explore ways to enhance ties between Uganda and Brazil through diplomatic channels, with plans to develop a roadmap for this cooperation.
Abubakhar is representing Uganda at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which runs from April 28-29 and serves as preparation for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in July.
BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with new full members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, and new partner countries including Uganda. The bloc represents a significant portion of the global population and economy.
Brazil assumed the BRICS chairmanship in 2025, with a focus on cooperation with the Global South and partnerships for sustainable development.
