Uganda’s Traffic Police has ordered all vehicle owners to transfer ownership into their names, effective immediately, in preparation for the rollout of digital number plates.
According to Traffic Police spokesperson, Michael Kananura, previous owners are hindering these transfers by demanding payments, but this must stop. “Previous owners are urged to cooperate with current owners for smooth transfers,” Kananura appealed.
The move is aimed at ensuring that all vehicles are registered in the correct owner’s name, a prerequisite for the migration to digital number plates. The Traffic Police warned that failure to comply with the mandatory ownership transfers will result in penalties.
Under the new digital system, traffic tickets will be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle, emphasizing the need for accurate and up-to-date ownership records.
The development follows the January 6, 2025 rollout of the third phase of digital number plates at Malaba and Mutukula border points. The digital plates are priced at 714,300 shillings for new registrations, 150,000 shillings for replacements, and 50,000 shillings for motorcycle plates.
Vehicle owners are advised to expedite the transfer process to avoid any inconveniences. The Traffic Police reassured the public that the mandatory ownership transfers are a necessary step towards a more efficient and effective vehicle registration system.
