KAMPALA, Uganda — As the rainy season commences, the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety has issued a warning to motorists to exercise extra caution on the roads.
According to SP Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police Spokesperson, the rainy season brings hazardous driving conditions that require motorists to be more vigilant.
“The rainy season is here, and we urge all motorists to be cautious while driving. The roads are slippery, visibility is reduced, and the risk of accidents is higher,” Kananura said.
Kananura advised motorists to maintain their vehicles by checking tires, brakes, and lights to ensure they are in good working condition.
“We have noticed that many accidents occur due to poor vehicle maintenance. We urge motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy to avoid accidents,” Kananura said.
Additionally, Kananura urged drivers to slow down, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid flooded areas.
“Flooded areas can be deceiving, and it’s difficult to gauge the depth of the water. We urge motorists to avoid driving through flooded areas to avoid accidents,” Kananura said.
Kananura also emphasized the importance of increasing visibility by using headlights and ensuring windshield wipers are in good condition.
“We urge motorists to use their headlights during the rainy season to increase visibility. Also, ensure that your windshield wipers are in good condition to avoid obstructed vision,” Kananura said.
Furthermore, Kananura advised motorists to avoid overtaking, especially in poor visibility conditions, and to pull over to a safe place if visibility is extremely poor.
“Overtaking is a major cause of accidents, especially during the rainy season. We urge motorists to avoid overtaking and to pull over to a safe place if visibility is poor,” Kananura said.
Kananura concluded by emphasizing that safety is everyone’s responsibility and encouraged motorists to stay vigilant, drive responsibly, and arrive alive.
“We urge all motorists to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of other road users. Let’s work together to reduce accidents and ensure that our roads are safe for everyone,” Kananura said.
