KAMPALA, UGANDA – In a daring overnight heist, thieves broke into Kyolina Kyekikweyimilira Limited, a money lending firm in Kampala, making off with millions in cash, laptops, and mobile phones.
According to police reports, the thieves stole UGX 51.7 million in cash, 45 laptops, and 50 mobile phones from the firm’s offices located on Mbogo Road, Kiwatule Parish, Nakawa Division.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, confirmed the incident. “We received a report of a break-in at Kyolina Kyekikweyimilira Limited, and our officers are investigating.”
The thieves gained access to the premises by cutting through iron sheets and the wooden ceiling. They also cut the internal padlock on the front door.
Nakayima Hellen, a 45-year-old loans officer, reported the incident. “We arrived at work to find our offices had been broken into. The thieves took everything of value,” she said.
A security guard employed at the company recounted unusual events leading up to the discovery of the break-in. He claimed a visitor offered him a drink, which made him feel unwell, leading to him falling asleep. Upon waking, he found the offices had been breached.
The police have officially recorded the case as shop breaking and theft. A joint team of officers from Kiwatule Police and Kira Road Police Division is investigating the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate the thieves dismantled security cameras, the safe, and other systems prior to executing the theft.
ASP Owoyesigyire urged anyone with information to come forward. “We encourage anyone who may have seen or heard something suspicious to assist in the ongoing investigation.”
