KAMPALA, UGANDA — Brigadier General Keith Katungi, Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, has warned charcoal dealers in Northern Uganda to cease operations immediately or face consequences.
The warning follows continued violations of the Presidential directive banning charcoal burning and transportation in Northern Uganda, issued in May 2023.
Brig Gen Katungi stated that the UPDF is authorized to arrest vehicles carrying charcoal and auction them, with proceeds going to a consolidated fund.
The move aims to curb charcoal trafficking, which has seen individuals exploit loopholes in the National Forestry Authority law and bribe local authorities.
The UPDF has already impounded 21 vehicles in Lira, with owners acknowledging no extortion or tampering.
Local authorities have been criticized for ineffectiveness in stopping charcoal trade due to bribery and corruption.
Brig Gen Katungi urged local communities to engage in environmentally-friendly businesses.
“We urge the public to support our efforts to protect the environment,” he said.
Capt David Drichi, Regional Internal Security Officer for Lango, and Maj Enock Atamba, Commanding Officer of the 103 Battalion in Lira, supported Brig Gen Katungi’s warning.
