KAMPALA – Isaac Ssemakadde, the newly elected President of the Uganda Law Society, has pledged to serve with integrity and tackle moral bankruptcy within the judiciary.
In his victory speech, Ssemakadde emphasized the collective responsibility of the legal fraternity to promote justice and unity. “This victory belongs to all of us – each member who believes in the strength of our collective voice, the power of justice, and the importance of unity in our legal fraternity.” He further stated, “I am deeply humbled and honored by the trust you have placed in me. I am committed to serving you with integrity, transparency, and unwavering dedication.”
Ssemakadde, known for his unconventional style, has taken on numerous public interest litigation cases that his peers have shied away from, demonstrating his commitment to justice. As President, he aims to advance the values of the Uganda Law Society, ensuring a brighter future for the profession and the country.
His leadership is expected to bring a unique and refreshing approach to the organization, focusing on accountability and justice. “I look forward to working alongside each of you, listening to your concerns, and turning our shared vision into tangible progress,” Ssemakadde added.
Ssemakadde’s campaign centered around four key pillars: Decolonization, which involves challenging existing power structures and promoting African values; Demilitarization, aimed at reducing military influence in governance; Democratization, promoting participatory democracy and human rights; and Digital Transformation, leveraging technology to enhance access to justice.
His commitment to tackling moral bankruptcy is rooted in his belief that the judiciary should serve with integrity. As a lawyer, Ssemakadde has built a reputation for being a fierce advocate for human rights and the rule of law.
Some critics have raised concerns about Ssemakadde’s moral character, but these claims seem to be part of a smear campaign to impede his success. His supporters argue that his unapologetic approach is necessary to address Uganda’s deepening crisis in the Judiciary, Parliament, and military.
Ssemakadde’s presidency is expected to complement these efforts, promoting accountability and integrity within the judiciary.
Ssemakadde’s victory is seen as a significant milestone, particularly given his history of challenging the status quo. His commitment to serving with integrity and dedication has resonated with members, inspiring hope for a brighter future in Uganda’s legal landscape.
