KAMPALA, UGANDA – The recent appointment of former MP Michael Tusiime to a newly created parliamentary role has sparked controversy, with many questioning the legitimacy of his selection.
Concerned citizen Edwin Kwesiga voiced his dissatisfaction on social media, alleging a lack of transparency and unclear criteria.
“Ugandans are concerned over Michael Tusiime’s parliamentary appointment to a role that never existed before. The lack of transparency, unclear criteria, and absence of public advertisement have raised eyebrows, sparking concerns about corruption and favoritism,” he wrote.
“What’s even more surprising is that Tusiime, a self-proclaimed champion of transparency and anti-corruption, accepted a job that seems to have bypassed legal processes. Many are questioning the legitimacy of his appointment, especially since it appears to be based on favoritism rather than merit,” he added.
Tusiime’s appointment came at a time when the institution is facing allegations of mismanagement of funds and irregular staff recruitment.
Critics question the legitimacy of his appointment, especially since it appears to be based on favoritism rather than merit.
Tusiime lost to Dr. Robert Rukaari, in the September 2020 NRM party primary elections to represent Mbarara North.
Speaker Anita Among of Parliament has declined to address these allegations, dismissing them as being propagated by unreliable sources.
Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo has previously expressed worries about conducting business as usual amidst public outcry over the institution’s expenditures.
“We cannot continue with business as usual when there are serious concerns about the institution’s spending,” Ssekikubo said.
The issue was initially raised by the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi.
Social media activists have circulated documents alleging nepotism and financial misconduct, although their authenticity remains unverified.
The controversy surrounding Tusiime’s appointment has added to concerns about the institution’s commitment to transparency.
