SMEs in oil and gas sector urged to prioritize health, safety, and environment

At a recent Suppliers Development workshop in Kampala, industry experts emphasized the importance of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) seeking contracts in the oil and gas sector.

Jimmy Mugerwa, Managing Director of Zoramu Consulting Group and former Managing Director of Tullow Uganda, told SME proprietors to prioritize human life in their business operations. “Health, Safety, and Environment is not just a requirement, but an opportunity to ensure zero accidents and protect people’s assets and the environment,” he said.

Adnan Okello, a Safety Audits and Contracts Expert, advised SME managers to identify and mitigate risks associated with HSE to prevent accidents and ensure regulatory compliance. “In the oil and gas sector, HSE compliance is crucial to avoid penalties and build trust with stakeholders,” he added.

Komugisha Rossette of the Industry Enhancement Centre emphasized the need for SMEs to submit annual reports on inspections, audits, and safety measures to guarantee compliance with HSE requirements. “HSE is critical in the oil and gas sector, as an incident can result in significant revenue loss and loss of life,” she said.

The workshop aimed to provide SMEs with essential insights and skills in HSE to meet the requirements for successful bids and contracts in the oil and gas sector.
