Samuel Sanya has received the top prize at the inaugural Dr George Lipimile Media Excellence awards at the Avani Victoria Falls Hotel in Livingstone, Zambia.
The accolade is awarded to the best competition and consumer rights reporter in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) by the regions Competition Commission.
The East African newspapers Julius Barigaba took second place in what was a podium sweep for Uganda. The award ceremony coincided with the commissions 8th business reporters’ workshop in Livingstone, Zambia.
The workshop attracted 10 COMESA member states who were represented by 26 journalists from 23 media houses.
Dr Lipimile underscored the need for the media to deliver clear, consistent and comprehensive messages about competition and the consumer welfare issues.
“The relationship between the competition regulators and the media has strengthened over time and has become an important one,” he said.
