A 27-year-old man, Fred Nasasira, has been arrested in connection with the murder of 5-year-old Gift Amutuhaire in Rukungiri district. The victim’s body was found buried in a bush on June 19, 2024, three days after she was reported missing.
According to the police, Gift had left her home on June 16, 2024, to visit her grandmother, but never returned. Her mother, Ntegyerize Sarah, reported a case of kidnapping at Kebisoni police station the next day.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Gift was last seen with Nasasira and another person, Allan Akanyijuka, in a farm where they had gone to water cows. Akanyijuka reported seeing Nasasira carrying Gift on his back, but when he returned with water, they were nowhere to be found.
The police have taken Nasasira into custody, and inquiries are ongoing to establish the motive behind the alleged murder. The postmortem report revealed that the victim was defiled before being murdered.
The Rukungiri police have urged anyone with information about the case to come forward as they continue to investigate. The suspect will be arraigned in court upon completion of the inquiries.
