KAMPALA, UGANDA — Assoc. Prof. Bruce Kirenga has assumed the role of principal at Makerere University’s College of Health Sciences (MakCHS), succeeding Prof. Damalie Nakanjako.
The handover ceremony, held on December 2, 2024, at the college’s boardroom, marked the beginning of Kirenga’s tenure. Prof. Nakanjako had served as principal since December 2020.
“I thank family, friends and colleagues who supported and allowed me share my time with the college, especially beyond official hours,” Prof. Nakanjako said in her remarks, reflecting on her tenure with pride.
Kirenga, a pulmonologist and researcher, expressed gratitude to the university’s leadership and the search committee for entrusting him with the role. He outlined his priorities, including improving staffing, strengthening relationships with teaching hospitals, and addressing infrastructure needs.
“It’s a true honour to have been entrusted with this role,” Kirenga said. “The search process was rigorous, but I learned so much from the ideas shared by my colleagues — it was a truly honourable competition.”
Kirenga emphasized the importance of collaboration and teamwork, saying, “Let’s create a common vision through consultation and work together. I’ll visit every unit in the college to hear directly from staff about their challenges, needs, and ideas for moving forward.”
He also plans to establish a forum of past leaders to ensure continuity in leadership.
