Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) is scheduled to brief the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, on the release of the 2024 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results tomorrow, Tuesday, January 21. The briefing will take place at State House Nakasero at 2:30 pm, after which the official release date will be confirmed.
According to UNEB, a total of 1,320,400 candidates registered for the four national examinations, commonly referred to as the “4Es”, marking a 7.8% increase in registration compared to last year. This significant rise in candidature is a testament to the growing number of students seeking to access education in Uganda.
Female candidates accounted for 51.1% of the total, indicating a slight increase in the number of girls accessing education. This trend is consistent with the government’s efforts to promote girls’ education and empower women in Uganda.
A breakdown of the registration figures reveals that 798,771 candidates sat for the PLE, while 379,748 candidates took the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams across various centers nationwide. The Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) also saw a significant increase in candidature, with a 28.4% rise in registration.
To ensure the smooth marking of the PLE exams, UNEB contracted 7,500 examiners, who worked tirelessly at 13 designated centers. The board’s Executive Director, Dan N. Odongo, expressed his gratitude to the examiners and other stakeholders who contributed to the successful administration of the exams.
The release of the PLE results is highly anticipated by students, parents, and educators, as it marks a significant milestone for students transitioning to secondary education. The results will also provide valuable insights into the performance of students and schools, informing education policy and interventions.
UNEB spokesperson Jennifer Kalule assured the public that the board has taken all necessary measures to ensure the integrity and security of the examination process. “We are confident that the results will reflect the true performance of the candidates,” she said.
The briefing at State House Nakasero tomorrow will provide an opportunity for UNEB to share more details about the examination process, the performance of candidates, and the way forward for education in Uganda.
