Members of the NRM’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) convene to discuss key party matters, amid corruption allegations and leadership tensions
The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has carried out a significant reshuffle of committee chairpersons in Parliament. The changes were made during a meeting at State House Entebbe, chaired by President Museveni, the party’s national chairperson.
Several committee chairpersons and their deputies were dropped and replaced with new ones. Those affected include Moses Magogo, who chaired the ICT and National Guidance Committee, and Mwine Mpaka, who chaired the Tourism, Trade and Industry Committee.
Robina Rwakoojo, chairperson of the Legal and Parliamentary Committee, and her deputy, Yusuf Mutembuli, who is currently facing corruption charges, were also dropped. John Teira replaced Mutembuli as deputy chairperson of the Legal and Parliamentary Committee.
Linda Agnes Auma, who was chairperson of the Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Committee, was replaced by Hope Nakazibwe as deputy chairperson. Geofrey Feta was appointed chairperson of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, replacing Dr. Emmanuel Otaala.
The reshuffle affects 15 sectoral committees, including Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Defence and Internal Affairs, East African Community Affairs, Education and Sports, Environment and Natural Resources, Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Foreign Affairs, Gender, Labour and Social Development, Health, Information, Communication Technology and National Guidance, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Presidential Affairs, Public Service and Local Government, Tourism, Trade and Industry, and Physical Infrastructure.
According to NRM spokesperson Emmanuel Dombo, the changes are in line with a 2021 resolution to rotate members who have served two consecutive terms or more. President Museveni reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption during the meeting.
The full list of dropped chairpersons, deputies, and their replacements is expected to be presented by Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua. The new appointees will undergo a rigorous process to ensure they meet the party’s standards.
