KAMPALA, Uganda — A coalition of Ugandan NGOs is using spiritual healing to help teenage mothers overcome trauma and rebuild their lives.
The Power Coalition, which includes organizations such as The Remnant Generation, Anthill Foundation, and Trailblazers, held extensive prayers yesterday in Kampala. Over 200 abused teen mothers and expectant mothers attended the prayers, where they were counseled and urged on the need to value the second chance given to them.
“We believe that true healing and transformation come from a holistic approach that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of these girls,” said Annabel Nakaviri Mukisa, a leader within the coalition.
The coalition is working together to provide a range of services, including healthcare, counseling, education, and vocational training. They are also promoting school re-entry, encouraging families to support girls’ education, and providing opportunities for them to overcome barriers.
According to Elizabeth Kalemera, Executive Director of the Anthill Foundation, a member of the coalition, the goal is to change the narrative and create a better future for the young generation.
“The issue of teenage pregnancy in Uganda is alarming, with approximately 25% of girls affected, leading to many dropping out of school,” Kalemera said. “We need to engage families, communities, and young people themselves in the decision-making process, ensuring that adolescents are aware of the actions being taken on their behalf.”
The coalition is also emphasizing the need for adults to positively impact the younger generation.
“We need to be intentional about raising our children, both boys and girls, and prioritize their well-being and education,” Kalemera said.
As part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the coalition is renewing its commitment to empowering adolescent girls and creating a brighter future for all.
“We believe that by working together and addressing the root causes of these issues, we can bring about lasting change in the lives of these girls and create a brighter future for all,” said Mukisa.
