Kiruhura District, the cattle-rich homeland of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, has unleashed a tax tornado on the lucrative cow dung market!
The district’s Chief Administrative Officer, Charles Nsubuga Kiberu, has issued a circular slapping hefty taxes on cow dung loading: UGX 10,000 for pickup (one ton), UGX 30,000 for canter lorry (three tons), UGX 50,000 for tipper lorry (five tons), UGX 70,000 for Fuso lorry (seven tons), and a staggering UGX 100,000 for Sino truck (10 tons).
“We’re not milking the system dry; we’re just tapping into a golden opportunity!” Kiberu declared.
Sanga Town Council Mayor Safari Mugyenyi hailed the policy as a game-changer. “We’ve been sitting on a goldmine, and now we’re reaping the rewards!”
But farmers like Abel Kankiriho are wary. “It’s a double-edged sword,” he said. “We’re making money from cow dung, but now we have to pay taxes on it.”
Nyabushozi MP Wilson Kajwengye fueled the debate, urging farmers to utilize cow dung for crop production. “Don’t let this valuable resource go to waste!”
As President Museveni, the Ankole sub-region’s largest cow owner, faces this new tax reality, many wonder how it will impact his vast cattle empire.
Kiberu noted that numerous lorries transport cow dung out of the district, affecting road durability and impacting local revenue. While he didn’t provide exact statistics on cow dung exports, he acknowledged its significant volume.
Mugyenyi revealed that a Fuso truckload of cow dung typically sells for UGX 100,000 to UGX 120,000.
As Kiruhura District cashes in on the cow dung bonanza, will President Museveni’s cow empire feel the tax heat? Only time will tell.
