President Yoweri Museveni has emphasized the importance of family-based economic transformation, urging journalists to play a key role in promoting this concept. During a meeting with journalists from the Bunyoro sub-region, Museveni stressed that economic transformation begins at the household level, and that families must be empowered to generate income and create wealth.
“The real issue is not just gender, but families still outside the money economy. My father, Amos Kaguta, was a traditional cattle keeper, but when I got an education, I transformed our family. We need every household engaged in wealth creation,” Museveni said.
Museveni noted that the Parish Development Model (PDM) is a key vehicle for achieving family-based economic transformation. He explained that the PDM provides funding to parish SACCOs, which are then used to support income-generating activities for families.
“The government sends sh100m per year to parish SACCOs. Of this, 30% should go to women, 30% to the youth, 10% to persons with disabilities, 10% to the elderly, and 10% to men,” he explained.
The President also highlighted the importance of agriculture in achieving economic transformation. He noted that irrigation is crucial for agricultural success, and that the government is committed to supporting irrigation projects. Museveni also emphasized the potential of cassava as a key crop, noting that it is an excellent source of carbohydrates and has industrial applications.
Museveni’s call to action for journalists is to focus on promoting family-based economic transformation and the PDM. He urged journalists to highlight success stories and challenges faced by families in their economic transformation journeys.
In addition to his remarks on economic transformation, Museveni also addressed other issues, including healthcare, education, and infrastructure development. He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing quality healthcare and education, and noted that infrastructure development is critical for economic growth.
The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and Minister of ICT and National Guidance Chris Baryomunsi. Other officials present included the Minister of State for the Youth and Children Affairs, Hon. Balaam Barugahara, and State House Comptroller, Ms. Jane Barekye.
Prime Minister Nabbanja reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting economic transformation at the parish level. She noted that the PDM is a key strategy for achieving inclusive development and promoting economic growth.
