KAMPALA, Uganda — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni announced plans to create a special fund for fishermen, aimed at improving their livelihoods.
Museveni made the announcement during a visit to a farm in Sironko village, Buliisa district, where he was assessing the performance of the Parish Development Model program.
The president acknowledged that the current funding for fishermen under the program is insufficient, citing the high cost of fishing tools such as boats and nets.
“The PDM money isn’t enough for them to purchase these tools. And so, we shall create other funds for them,” Museveni said.
He instructed his officials to organize a meeting with fishing community leaders in May to discuss the details of the fund.
During his visit, Museveni also donated 10 million shillings to a model farmer, Titus Tumusiime, to help him purchase a vehicle to transport pig feed. He also gave Tumusiime 25 million shillings to buy a grinder.
Tumusiime, who received nearly 1 million shillings under the PDM program, used the funds to purchase pigs and pig feed, and has since earned over 4.3 million shillings from selling piglets.
Museveni’s visit was also attended by government ministers, members of parliament, and other local leaders.
In related news, Museveni addressed the issue of the Kingship of Bugungu, also known as Butebengwa, saying he has no problem with the kingship and promising to facilitate a meeting between the Butebengwa team and the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom to resolve any issues.
He also urged local leaders to get involved in addressing issues related to Lake Albert and promised to organize a stakeholders’ meeting in May to discuss the matter.
