Museveni Names Dr. Crispus Kiyonga New Makerere Chancellor

Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, newly appointed Chancellor of Makerere University, brings a wealth of experience in public service and academia to his new role.

President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as the new Chancellor of Makerere University.

The development was confirmed by Makerere University’s Vice Chancellor, Barnabas Nawangwe on Saturday morning.

“His Excellency the President of Uganda has appointed Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as the new Chancellor of Makerere University,” Prof. Nawangwe wrote. He added, “On behalf of the Makerere University Council, I extend our warm congratulations to Dr. Kiyonga on this prestigious appointment and warmly welcome him to the service of Makerere University.”

Dr. Kiyonga replaces Professor Ezra Suruma, who has served two terms as Chancellor since 2016. Dr. Kiyonga is a former Member of Parliament for Bukonzo County West, Kasese, and Uganda’s former Ambassador to China.

Dr. Kiyonga was born on January 1, 1952, in Kasese District in the Western Region of Uganda. He attended Bwera Primary School in Kasese from 1959 to 1966, Nyakasura School from 1967 to 1970, and King’s College Budo from 1971 to 1972.

He studied medicine at Makerere University School of Medicine, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in 1978.

Later, he obtained a Master of Health Science (MHS) with a specialization in Population Dynamics from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in 2004.

Dr. Kiyonga has had a distinguished career in public service, including roles as Minister of Defense, Minister of Health, and Minister of Internal Affairs.

He has also served as a consultant with the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
