KAMPALA, Uganda — President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday launched a UGX 23 billion project to upgrade the Jinja Airfield, a strategic move aimed at bolstering Uganda’s infrastructure, enhancing tourism and improving regional connectivity.
The project, set to be completed within 15 months, will see the development of the airfield’s runway, taxiway and apron to international standards. The upgrade is being undertaken by a joint venture between Gofar Investment and MJ Engineers and Contractors.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Museveni emphasized the importance of the project, highlighting Jinja’s potential as a transportation hub and gateway for tourists.
“The upgrading of the Jinja Airfield is a critical component of our efforts to transform Uganda’s economy,” Museveni said. “It will enable tourists to reach their destinations quickly and efficiently, and will also facilitate the transportation of goods and people.”
The First Deputy Prime Minister, Rebecca Kadaga, appealed to the President for an additional 10 acres of land to further expand the airfield and accommodate the growing demands of an international airport.
“The people of Jinja have long dreamed of having an international airport, and this project brings us closer to that vision,” Kadaga said.
The State Minister for Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, emphasized the project’s potential to enhance tourism.
“The upgrading of the Jinja Airfield will significantly boost the tourism sector, as tourists will no longer face challenges traveling from Kampala to Jinja by road,” Byamukama said.
The project is part of the government’s broader strategy to upgrade the country’s infrastructure, including the rehabilitation and expansion of airfields, railway stations and water transport systems.
Uganda’s tourism sector is expected to benefit significantly from the upgrade, with the government anticipating an increase in tourist arrivals and revenue. The country is home to several world-renowned tourist attractions, including the source of the Nile River and Murchison Falls National Park.
The government has committed UGX 23 billion to fund the project, which is expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the region.
In related developments, the government has announced plans to establish an international airport in Kidepo National Park, which will provide easy access to the country’s wildlife destinations.
