Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, fondly known as “Mr. Update,” has left an indelible mark on the people of Kawempe North and Uganda at large. His journey from a casual, energetic social media enthusiast to a Member of Parliament was nothing short of inspirational.
Ssegirinya’s rise to prominence began with his frequent phone calls to radio and TV stations, where his witty, humorous, and sometimes controversial remarks gained him a loyal following. His signature smiling face and down-to-earth character endeared him to many Ugandans, particularly the youth.
In 2016, Ssegirinya ventured into politics and successfully contested for the position of Kawempe Lord Councillor. His victory signaled the beginning of a political career marked by unconventional methods, unrelenting passion, and a connection with the common man.
In the 2021 elections, Ssegirinya contested for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat and won, defeating seasoned politicians. During the first three months of his tenure, he astounded many by achieving remarkable milestones, including the construction of a hospital for the underprivileged in his constituency.
He also launched the “SEG BOX” campaign, a savings initiative targeting low income earners. By promoting a culture of saving, the initiative uplifted thousands of struggling families and became a cornerstone of his legacy.
Despite his accomplishments, Ssegirinya’s parliamentary career was not without controversy. A few months after assuming office, he and his colleague, Hon. Allan Ssewanyana, were arrested on allegations of funding a machete gang responsible for killings in Masaka. The accusations led to a dramatic turn in his life.
Ssegirinya spent over two years in prison, during which his health deteriorated. His release on bail offered a glimmer of hope for his family and supporters. However, his subsequent medical treatment in Kenya highlighted the gravity of his condition.
Although he had expressed his determination to resume his duties as Kawempe North’s legislator, fate had other plans.
On January 9, 2025, Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya was pronounced dead at Lubaga Hospital, marking the end of a life filled with passion, resilience, and service.
Ssegirinya will be remembered as a man of the people a leader who used his unique character and charm to connect with the masses. His contributions, such as the hospital for the poor and the transformative “SEG BOX” campaign, will continue to benefit his constituents for years to come.
