His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, hosted Sheikh Thafier Najjar, President of the Islamic Council of South Africa, at his office at the UMSC headquarters in Old Kampala on Monday, April 7, 2025.

Sheikh Najjar to be joined by Sheikh Usman Bugale, Chairman of the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs and representative of the Sultan of Sokoto. He is to arrive in Uganda tonight. The delegation is in Uganda to join His Eminence Dr. Mubaje, in his role as Chairman of the African Forum for Muslim Councils (AFMC), for the upcoming 11th Session of the African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development. The event will run from April 9 to 11 at Speke Resort Convention Centre, Munyonyo.
The African Forum for Muslim Councils is among the stakeholders invited under the Interreligious Council of Uganda (IRCU), which unites mainstream faith groups. They will present under the sub-theme: “The Role of Faith Communities and Institutions in Driving Social Change and Transformation through Partnerships to Achieve SDGs 2030 and Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.” This forms part of the broader theme: “Driving Economic Growth through Sustainable, Inclusive, Science- and Evidence-Based Solutions.”
In his welcome remarks, the Mufti shared a brief background of UMSC, outlining its structure, leadership, and key activities.
The meeting featured wide-ranging discussions. Topics included the propagation of Islam in Africa, education, healthcare, halal certification, infrastructure development, exchange visits, managerial best practices, and knowledge sharing.
In attendance were His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Hafiz Muhammad Harunah Bukenya, the 2nd Deputy Mufti; Hon. Hadji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi, UMSC Secretary General; his Deputy, Hon. Abdu-Razaq Arinda, in charge of Planning and Development; Hon. Hon. Dr. Ebraheem Ssali the Executive Secretary African Forum for Muslim Councils- AFMC, Haj Ali Juma Ngobi, Secretary for Finance and Planning; and Sheikh Imran Ssali, Secretary for Religious Affairs.
