Mufti Advises Couples to Share Phone Passwords

BUZIGA– His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, has advised Muslim married couples to share their phone passwords as a way to cultivate trust and compassion in their marriages.

This advice was part of Mufti Mubaje’s speech at the colorful wedding of Sheikh Imran Ssali, the UMSC Secretary for Religious Affairs held at the residence of Sheikh Hussein Sengendo, the father of the bride, in Buziga, Makindye Division, Kampala City, on Sunday, September 1st, 2024.

“One way to keep marriage ties intact, especially in this modern era where couples possess smartphones, is for the man to keep his phone password to himself if he is married to more than one wife, while the wives could share theirs to avoid causing a rift among them,” Mufti Mubaje remarked, eliciting laughter from the guests.

In his speech, Mufti Mubaje also quoted the celebrated saying of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him): “Marriage is one of my traditions. So whoever rejects it is not part of me.”

Sheikh Mubaje encouraged the guests to embrace marriage as a means of fulfilling a righteous life, in contrast to embracing worldly alternatives promoted by Western cultures, which, he noted, are contrary to Islamic tenets and contribute to both health and psychological problems, citing homosexual acts as an example.

Sheikh Mubaje praised Sheikh Imran Ssali, describing him as humble, humorous, understanding, and a beneficiary of the UMSC scholarship. “We sent him to study Islamic theology in Sudan, and upon completion, he returned and accepted to serve. We have not faulted him in any way since he started serving in different positions at the Council,” he said.

Addressing the couple, Sheikh Imran Ssali and his bride, Ms. Nassanga Zaituni, a teacher, Mufti Mubaje blessed them and urged them to be exemplary, given their strong religious backgrounds.

Mufti Mubaje also expressed concern over the behavior of some notable Sheikhs who misuse social media platforms to hurl insults at others and spread hate speech, including against people of other faiths. He implored them to stop such behavior.

He concluded by urging Muslims to support the UMSC in its transformation programs. Before Mufti Mubaje’s speech, His Eminence Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, the Deputy Mufti, and Prof. Dr. Badru Kiggundu, the former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, shared words of wisdom with the gathering.

Among the guests were members of the UMSC National Executive, General Assembly, and National Management Committee, led by Hon. Counsel Haj Muhammad Ali, Deputy Secretary General in charge of Finance and Administration, Sheikh Twaha Uthuman, Mufti’s Special Envoy to the Republic of South Sudan, Sheikh Salim Bbosa, Deputy Director of Sharia, Regional Assistants to the Mufti, District Kadhis, and County Sheikhs, among others.
