KAMPALA-The Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development, through its Permanent Secretary, Ramathan Ggoobi, has confirmed the arrest of their staff in relation to mysterious disappearance of Shs 60 billion from the Bank of Uganda last year.
The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development wishes to inform the general public, all other Government Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Local Governments, as well as the Development Partners that due to ongoing investigations relating to some operations at the Treasury, some officers attached to the Accountant General’s Office (AGO) were summoned and detained by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to facilitate conclusion of the investigations.” Reads part of the Finance Ministry statement dated February 4th 2025.
Ggoobi further promised that the Ministry has provided the investigating authorities full support and ensured that all the concerned officers fully cooperate as required.
“We wish to assure everyone concerned that all our services, including those provided by the AGO are operating normally. More information will be provided in due course.”
On Tuesday evening, nine officials from Uganda’s Ministry of Finance were arrested following interrogation by the Criminal Investigation Department at their headquarters in Kibuli, Kampala.
Those in detention are; Lawrence Semakula, the Accountant General , Jennifer Muhurizi, Mubarak Nansamba, Tony Yawe, Paul Lumala, Mark Kasuku, Nayebare, Judith Ashaba, and Deborah Kusiima.
These spent will spend the night in Police cells awaiting for the progress of their file.
Towards the end of last year, news broke that Bank of Uganda had transferred 60 billion shillings erroneously incorrect accounts in the United Kingdom and Japan. This resulted into deeper investigations which led into arrest of several officials.
