KAMPALA, Uganda — Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has urged Airtel Uganda’s new Managing Director, Mr. Soumendra Sahu, to build on the company’s existing contributions to the country’s socio-economic transformation.
Dr. Baryomunsi made the remarks during a meeting with Mr. Sahu, where he congratulated him on his appointment and welcomed him to Uganda. The minister acknowledged Airtel Uganda’s participation in the country’s liberal market reforms, which began in 1994, and praised the company’s recent achievements, including the listing of 20% of its shares on the Uganda Stock Exchange and the pioneering of 5G technology in Uganda ¹.
The minister also commended Airtel Uganda’s efforts to expand internet access to remote areas, such as Kanungu, which he represents in Parliament. However, he challenged the company to continue innovating and delivering world-class products, while also listening to customer feedback and paying taxes.
Mr. Sahu thanked the minister and the government for creating a conducive policy and regulatory environment, which has enabled Airtel Uganda to participate in the country’s ICT transformation journey. He assured the minister that Airtel Uganda will continue to draw on the global expertise of Airtel Africa and Bharti Airtel to comply with policy and regulatory obligations, while connecting people and businesses to global opportunities.
“Our commitment is to innovate and deliver products, services, and solutions that meet the needs of our customers, while maintaining global standards and accountability,” Mr. Sahu said.
