NAIROBI, KENYA – The Merck Foundation has announced a significant boost to healthcare capacity in Africa and beyond, awarding 830 scholarships to doctors from 52 countries.
These scholarships will enable doctors to pursue post-graduate diplomas and master’s degrees in critical medical specialties, including preventative cardiovascular medicine, cardiology, diabetes, endocrinology, and obesity and weight management.
According to Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, “We mark World Heart Day 2024 through our daily efforts in building healthcare capacity and improving access to quality and equitable cardiovascular preventative care, cardiology, hypertension, and diabetes.”
The initiative addresses the significant contribution of Africa to the global burden of cardiovascular disease, as noted by the World Heart Federation.
“The scholarships have been awarded to young doctors to create a strong network of experts across the countries, extending beyond just the capitals and major cities,” Dr. Kelej added.
Merck Foundation’s commitment to healthcare capacity building extends beyond scholarships. The organization has also launched animation films and children’s storybooks to educate children and youth about hypertension, diabetes, and healthy lifestyles.
In partnership with African First Ladies, Merck Foundation has released adapted animation films promoting healthy lifestyles and awareness.
The foundation’s pan-African TV program, “Our Africa,” raises awareness about social and health issues, including diabetes and promoting healthy lifestyles.
