
Merck Foundation has announced the winners of the Merck Foundation Africa Research Summit (MARS) Awards 2024, recognizing five researchers from across Africa for their outstanding contributions to scientific research.
The winners, who will receive research training at a premier institute in India, were selected from two categories: ‘Best African Women Researchers Awards’ and ‘Best Young African Researchers Awards’.
Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, emphasized the importance of empowering women and young researchers in Africa, particularly in the field of women’s health and reproductive care.
“Through the MARS Awards, our mission is to empower young researchers in Africa and to specifically encourage and support women researchers by enhancing their research capabilities and promoting their vital roles in STEM,” Kelej said.
The winners of the ‘Best African Women Researchers Awards’ are Nompumelelo Lebogang Malaza from South Africa and Dorotheah Obiri from Ghana.
The winners of the ‘Best Young African Researchers Awards’ are Jules Irenge Mongane from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Christian Chassem Lapue from Gabon, and Gebrhud Berihu Haile from Ethiopia.
Merck Foundation has also announced the call for applications for the 2025 edition of the MARS Awards, with a special focus on ‘The Role of Scientific Research in Women Health and Reproductive Care’.
