Makerere University, Oregon State University Sign Historic Cooperation Agreement

KAMPALA, UGANDA – Makerere University and Oregon State University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate in various academic areas, marking a significant milestone in their partnership.

The MoU, signed at Makerere University’s Frank Kalimuzo Central Teaching Facility, aims to promote mutual interests in academic and research activities. The agreement was endorsed by Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, and witnessed by representatives from both institutions.

“As we move towards becoming a research-led University, we aim to contribute to the realization of Agenda 2063 which seeks to have Africa produce at least one million PhDs as one of the measures to eradicate poverty from the continent. Partnerships like this will help us achieve our target, by building our supervision capacity,” Prof. Nawangwe explained, pledging support towards the implementation of the MoU.

The partnership will facilitate the exchange of scholars and faculty staff, undergraduate and graduate students for research and study, exchange of academic information and materials, joint research activities and publications, participation in conferences and academic meetings, joint running of short-term academic programs, and resource mobilization.

Dr. Ian E. Munanura, Associate Professor at Oregon State University, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with Makerere University, noting that the partnership would strengthen research capacity and support the mentorship of the next generation of scientists to deal with the challenges facing humanity, including climate change and unemployment.

Oregon State University, a public research university located in Corvallis, Oregon, United States, is known for its strong programs in engineering, business, forestry, and agriculture, among others. Founded in 1868, OSU has grown to become one of the largest universities in the state, with a total enrollment of over 32,000 students. Classified as a “Highest Research Activity” institution by the Carnegie Foundation, OSU is committed to research and academic excellence. The university’s College of Forestry is particularly renowned for its research and academic programs in forestry and natural resources management.

The MoU will be implemented by the Department of Forestry, Biodiversity, and Tourism at Makerere University and the College of Forestry at Oregon State University. The partnership is expected to enhance academic and research collaborations, promoting mutual benefits and advancing knowledge in various fields.

The signing of the MoU marks a significant step forward in the partnership between Makerere University and Oregon State University, promising to yield fruitful collaborations and advancements in academic and research pursuits.
