KAMPALA, Uganda – Makerere University has announced a call for applications for four PhD positions under the “Building Opportunities for Lesser-known Diversity in Edible Resources” (BOLDER) project.
The BOLDER project aims to promote the use of neglected and underutilized species (NUS) in West and East Africa. The project is part of the larger “Biodiversity for Opportunity, Livelihoods and Development” (BOLD) initiative.
The PhD scholarships are open to citizens of Uganda and Tanzania, and will focus on two main areas: Plant Sciences and Food Systems. The Plant Sciences PhD projects will focus on the genetic and phenotypic characterization of NUS, while the Food Systems PhD projects will focus on the value chains and food cultures of NUS.
The scholarships will provide financial support for 48 months, including a monthly stipend, research costs, and conference attendance costs. The PhD candidates will also benefit from a three-month mobility period at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.
Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria, including holding a Master’s degree in a relevant field and demonstrating knowledge of or prior experience with relevant research methodologies.

This initiative is expected to contribute to the development of sustainable food systems in Africa, and to promote the use of neglected and underutilized species in the region.
