Makerere University Business School Launches Strategic Partnerships for Socio-Economic Transformation

These partnerships are strategically aligned with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the National Development Plans III & IV.

KAMPALA: Makerere University Business School (MUBS) has today 21st august 2024 announced four strategic partnerships that will play  a pivotal role in Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.

The partnerships announced include

EDUSERV Agency Ltd: Through this partnership, MUBS will facilitate international internships and apprenticeships for its students in Europe and North America. The program aims to provide students with critical international experience in fields such as Agriculture, Hospitality, Vocational Education, and Nursing.

This global exposure will not only enhance their professional development but also bring innovative ideas and practices to Uganda, contributing to the country’s economic growth.

Hotel General Managers Association of Uganda (HOGMAU): This collaboration focuses on building the capacity of Uganda’s hospitality sector by developing local talent. Through targeted training programs, MUBS and HOGMAU aim to reduce the country’s dependency on foreign expatriates by nurturing home-grown hospitality managers who are equipped to lead Uganda’s booming tourism industry.

VOCCENT Inc: VOCCENT’s multilingual language learning platform will be integrated into MUBS’s curriculum, offering students the opportunity to learn multiple languages that are critical for global business. This initiative will increase the employability of MUBS graduates in international markets and enhance Uganda’s global trade relations.

East, Central, and Southern African (ECASA) Group of Consultants: The ECASA Modern Swahili Teaching and Training Initiative (EMOSI) will be implemented as part of this partnership, promoting Kiswahili as a key language for business and communication in the East, Central, and Southern African regions. This initiative aligns with regional integration goals and will strengthen Uganda’s position in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Significance of the Partnerships:

These partnerships are strategically aligned with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the National Development Plans III & IV. By addressing critical gaps in skills development, particularly in the hospitality industry, and by enhancing the global competitiveness of Ugandan graduates, these collaborations are expected to drive socio-economic transformation in Uganda.

MUBS-Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) Collaboration:

Further strengthening these efforts is the recent MUBS-DIT collaboration, which aims to ISO-certify the partner organizations. This certification will ensure that the skills and qualifications acquired by MUBS students are recognized globally, thereby enhancing their employability and positioning Uganda as a hub for skilled labor in Africa.

Doctor Mutumba Abbey, Head of department, Business Languages and international relations at MUBS said that this partnership has started small but will grow big and they will produce quality, “Together, we are going to produce quality brands, quality students”. He added.

He also says in Uganda we lack people who can serve tourists with more than 6 languages, adding that as MUBS, they also have the DIT section headed by Dr. Katongole Celestine, who is also a tourist expert so quality will be delivered.
