
KAMPALA, Uganda — Makerere University has announced the availability of 201 scholarships under the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The scholarships, comprising 190 undergraduate and 11 master’s awards, are open to Ugandan nationals, refugees, students with disabilities, internally displaced young people, and international students joining Makerere University’s main campus.
To be eligible to apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, an applicant must belong to one of the specified categories and fulfill certain conditions. For undergraduate degree programs, applicants must have applied for admission to Makerere University’s main campus under the private sponsorship scheme for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Applicants must have completed their advanced secondary level education or hold a second-class/credit diploma from a recognized institution. Alternatively, they must have passed the mature age entry examinations of Makerere University for the years 2023 and 2024.
Additionally, applicants must be experiencing financial hardships and should not be holders of any other scholarship, including the Government of Uganda Scholarship. They should not have completed any undergraduate degree program and should have demonstrated leadership potential and/or community service.
Applicants under the categories of refugees, internally displaced persons, and students with disabilities should be 32 years old or younger at the time of the application deadline. A refugee applicant must hold a Refugee Identity Card or Family Attestation.
For master’s degree programs, applicants must have applied for admission to Makerere University’s main campus for the 2025/2026 academic year. They must have completed their undergraduate education in an African country and be experiencing financial hardships.
Applicants should not be holders of any other scholarship and should not be pursuing or have completed any master’s degree studies. They should have demonstrated leadership potential and/or community service and should not be over 35 years old at the application deadline.
Applicants in the refugee and students with disabilities categories should be under 40 years old at the application deadline. A refugee applicant must hold a Refugee Identity Card or Family Attestation.
Prospective applicants can access and complete the application form at no cost through the Online Application Portal. The deadline for submission of applications is Friday, June 6, 2025, at 11:59 PM EAT.
