KAMPALA, UGANDA – A 26-year-old Ugandan student is desperately seeking funds for a life-saving kidney transplant after being diagnosed with double kidney failure.
Brain Omasajja, a first-year student at Makerere University, was diagnosed in December 2023 and has since undergone costly dialysis sessions.
Doctors have advised that a kidney transplant is his only hope for survival, but the procedure comes with a hefty price tag of UGX 40 million.
Omasajja’s family and friends have organized a fundraising carwash to help meet the medical expenses.
“My brother’s life depends on this surgery,” said Amal Brenda, Omasajja’s sister. “Any support, financially or through prayers and encouragement, will mean the world to us.”
The family has set up a bank account for donations and is appealing to the public for assistance.
Background
Kidney failure occurs when the kidneys lose their ability to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. A kidney transplant is often the best treatment option.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), kidney disease is a growing health concern globally, with millions requiring treatment.
