LOP should be Runner in Presidential Elections – Katikiro Mayiga

MENGO-A few days after Mityana South Legislator Richard Lumu Legislator has been granted leave to table the Administration of Parliament Bill 2024, which will require to have the Leader of Opposition (LOP) elected by Members of Parliament, the Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga has provided his opinion on the matter.

“When I visited Parliament in 2013 during the Ettoffaali drive and met then Leader of Opposition (LOP), Nathan Nandala Mafabi, I suggested that the runner up in the presidential elections should automatically become LOP and Member of Parliament.” Reads part of Katikiro Mayiga’s tweet.

He also suggested that someone who gets the second highest number of votes should be the voice of those who didn’t elect the winning candidate.

“Without going through someone else, with whom they may not have a smooth working relationship as we have seen many times. Now my MP knows my stand, if an amendment to the law is tabled in Parliament.” He added

In the current law, the LOP is appointed by the opposition Party with the highest number of Legislators. The current LOP is Hon Joel Ssenyonyi who was appointed by National Unity Platform.

Last week , at Gulu Regional Parliamentary seating, he sought leave to prepare a bill for amendments in administration of Parliament which was later granted to him by the Speaker Hon Annet Anita Among.

Some opposition members supported the decision due to several reasons, as others accused the mover as a person being used by Ssenyonyi’s enemies.
