KAMPALA-The Uganda Law Council is expected to meet next week , so as to come up with the final decision on Martha Karua’s re submitted application for a temporary practicing certificate.
According to Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde, the meeting has been fixed for Monday, 6th January 2025, at 10:00 am.
“This is a crucial opportunity for the Council to reexamine its approach to requests for cross-border legal practice, and demonstrate true transparency and fairness. If her application is successful, Ms. Karua will be able to lead the defence team for Dr. Kizza Besigye and Haji Obeid Lutale at the general court martial the following day.” Remarked Ssemakadde
On December 6th 2025, Uganda Law Council declined to grant a practicing license to Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua , who had sought to represent Dr. Kizza Besigye in a controversial case before the Makindye General Court Martial. The council based on the ground that Karua’s application was not compliant with the amended Advocates Act, Chapter 295, and faulted her for not adhering to the updated requirements.
The act of the law Council was condemned by lawyers in Uganda, Uganda Law Society, Kenya Law Society, East African Law Society and other associations describing as being unfair as well as a barrier to cross border legal practice with in the East African Community.
Later on, on 23rd December 2024, Karua through Uganda Law Society, re submitted her application to the Law Council , thus resulting into the next week’s meeting.
