KAMPALA – Old students of Kitebi Primary School have promised to give a new lease of life to their former school through the execution of projects that will give it a facelift and improve the quality of teaching and learning at the Kampala-based school.
The school used to be an academic giant between the mid-1980s and early 2000s with a capacity of more than 1000 students. It currently has over 1700 learners but with poor facilities to accommodate them, according to Jeremiah Mugerwa, the President of Kitebi Old Teachers and Students Association (KOTASA).
Many old students, who have visited their school in the recent past, have been disappointed after looking at the dilapidated school structures and the performance at the national level.
“This school has been a powerhouse for so many years; it is of recent that the performance of our institution slowly but steadily has been deteriorating and declining. So as students, we thought it wise to come back to our mother school Kitebi [primary school] to see how we can pull resources and how we can come together and ensure that we give a helping hand so that we can revive our school,” Mr. Mugerwa told UG Standard in an interview.
He expressed the association’s commitment to improving the infrastructure of the school and making its environment more education-friendly.
“We intend to do quite a lot to support the school in terms of providing resources, equipment, and other services. We intend to offer scholarships for students, we intend to offer other donations, sports equipment, music, dance, and drama to ensure that the glory of our school that made us is rejuvenated and Kitebi goes back on the road,” he added.
As KOTASA president, Mugerwa said he will mobilise influential old students to reconnect to their school so as to contribute towards the rehabilitation of the school.
He also urged the administration to work with the old students to revive the school to regain its lost glory.
“It is very crucially important for all students to come back because it is a sign of appreciation of the school that made you or the school that nurtured you,” Mr. Mugerwa said, adding that “you cannot know the challenges the school is facing unless you go back.
“Now we have already known some of the challenges that our school is experiencing and we are looking forward to joining hands with the school administration to ensure that we sort out these challenges and our school regains its lost glory”.
Kitebi Primary School is a government of Uganda-sponsored school located in Rubaga Division, Kampala District.
