A devastating fuel tanker accident in Uganda has claimed 15 lives, after four more people succumbed to severe burns today.
The tragedy occurred yesterday in Kigogwa Town, along the Kampala-Bombo road in Wakiso district. The tanker, registered as UAM 292Q, was traveling from Kampala to Gulu when it overturned and caught fire.
Eleven people died at the scene, including nine adults and two minors who were burnt beyond recognition. The latest fatalities bring the death toll to 15.
“The scene was horrific,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Patrick Onyango. “We urge relatives to come forward to assist in identifying the deceased through DNA testing.”
Twenty-four others were injured, with 15 in intensive care and nine in the normal ward at Kirundu hospital. Four buildings housing nine shops were destroyed in the blaze.
The driver of the truck remains at large. An investigation is underway, with CCTV footage being reviewed to determine the cause of the accident.
Ugandan authorities have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
This latest tragedy highlights concerns over road safety in Uganda, where accidents are common due to poor infrastructure and reckless driving.
The Ugandan government has faced criticism for failing to address the country’s dire road safety record.
International organizations have called for improved safety measures and stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies.
