KENYA– Hon Martha Koome, the Chief Justice and President of Supreme Court in Kenya, has announced that on Tuesday 18th June 2024 all courts in the country will hold a special session for mourning and in remembrance of Hon. Monica Kivuti, the Principal Magistrate who was murdered last week by a Police officer.

In his official communication released on from his office on Monday 17th June 2024, noted that the Magistrate’s murder strikes at the heart of Judicial Independence and rule of law as enshrined in Kenya’s Constitution.
“ Hon. Kivuti was a gallant officer who died protecting the rule of law, holding court in a tent and over lunch hour.
The best way we can honour her commitment is by continuing to provide services in adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law. Any lapse that might lead to lawlessness and anarchy would be contrary to what Hon. Kivuti stood for. We are committed to Honouring her dedication to justice by following her example.” Remarked Justice Koome
He advised that all courts nationwide will proceed with their operations on Wednesday, 19th; Thursday, 20th; and Friday, 21st; except for Makadara Law Courts, which is under re-evaluation for security purposes.
“Judges, Judicial Officers, and Staff will utilize virtual Courts and secured permanent courts as needed.”
The Chief Justice also confirmed that he has already spoken with the Inspector General of Police, who has assured him that security in our court premises and for judges and Judicial Officers nationwide has been enhanced.
“Despite these assurances, we will continue to engage internally and with other relevant government Agencies and stakeholders to comprehensively address identified security gaps.”
He further assured Judicial staff that , the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary will issue a report on the State of Infrastructure and Security, detailing the resources needed to address persistent challenges.
