KAMPALA – The High Court in Kampala is set to commence the hearing of the highly publicized Katanga murder case today, with Justice Isaac Muwata presiding over the proceedings. Molly Katanga, the accused, has been hospitalized for eight months as the prosecution gathered evidence. She is charged alongside four others, including her two daughters and two men, with the murder of her husband, prominent businessman Henry Katanga.
The case took a dramatic turn when Molly’s children, who had responded to a distress call on the day of the incident, were accused by the police and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) of tampering with evidence. The state is represented by a team of seasoned prosecutors, while the defense team consists of five lawyers.
Despite her critical condition, the court has denied Molly bail, citing insufficient grounds in her application. Henry Katanga succumbed to a gunshot wound on November 2, 2023, at their residence in Kampala. Molly was found with severe injuries and has been hospitalized since then.
The indictment reveals a shocking sequence of events, including a struggle in the bedroom, a loud blast, and a desperate attempt to save Katanga’s life. The prosecution alleges that Molly and her co-accused are responsible for the murder, which was committed using Katanga’s own pistol.
The trial is expected to be a high-stakes battle, with the prosecution seeking justice for the slain businessman and the defense fighting to clear Molly’s name.
