Police have busted a motorcycle theft ring in the capital city, Kampala, recovering several stolen vehicles and arresting four suspects.
According to a statement released by the Kampala Metropolitan Police, the operation was carried out on February 18, 2024, at approximately 12:30 PM, at a garage in Wampeewo Cell, Wampeewo Ward, Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District.
The police said that the garage, owned by one Walusimbi Asuman, was a hub for stolen motorcycles, which were then sold to unsuspecting buyers after their registration details were altered.
“The operation was a result of intelligence gathered over time, which indicated that the garage was involved in the sale of stolen motorcycles,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Kampala Metropolitan Police.
During the operation, police recovered six motorcycles, including one that had been reported stolen at Kanyanya Police Station by Ms. Namutebi Eva. Preliminary findings suggest that the number plate on the motorcycle had been altered.
The recovered motorcycles include:
- TVS motorcycle with registration number UFR 309G
- Bajaj Boxer with registration number UEO 178G
- Bajaj Boxer with registration number UEB 674D
- Bajaj Boxer with registration number UDU 453M
- Bajaj Boxer with registration number UEB 348K
- A numberless Bajaj Boxer
Four suspects, including the owner of the garage, Walusimbi Asuman, were arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property. The other suspects are:
- Mulalizi Ismail, brother to Asuman
- Kayiru Yekosofat, who allegedly brought the stolen TVS motorcycle to the garage
- Sekamanda Junior
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to stolen property to the nearest police station.
The crackdown on the motorcycle theft ring is part of the police’s efforts to reduce crime and improve security in the country.
